Property-specific wind analysis

What wind did this property actually see?

Airport weather stations measure wind over open, flat ground. Your property isn’t that. Enter an address and a date range, and ChartTheWind pulls the official station records, adjusts them for the land cover and terrain around that address, and documents every step in a report you can save as a PDF.

What’s in a report

A documented analysis, not a single number.

Each section shows its inputs and its limits, so a reader can see how the answer was reached and how far to trust it.

  • 01

    All the observations

Every record from the nearest official stations (NOAA NCEI and the Iowa Mesonet), time-stamped in UTC, with each value’s source labelled.

  • 02

    Local & roof-level wind

Station winds translated to street level (15 ft) and a typical 2.5-story roof (30 ft) using ASCE 7-22 exposure constants.

  • 03

    Exposure by direction

Land cover around the property is sampled in each wind direction and classified Exposure B, C or D (USGS NLCD).

  • 04

    Terrain profile & Kzt

The upwind elevation profile is checked for hills and escarpments, and the topographic factor Kzt is applied only when the terrain qualifies.

  • 05

    NWS event summary

Gusts and sustained winds classified against National Weather Service advisory and warning thresholds, with first, last and peak times.

  • 06

    Directional wind rose

Peak gust and sustained wind by compass sector, drawn over satellite imagery of the property.

  • 07

    Regime timeline

How the wind direction shifted, and how long each flow pattern persisted, through the event.

  • 08

    Regional coherence

Neighbouring stations compared: do their peaks agree in size, timing and direction?

  • 09

    Confidence & references

Seven plain-language ratings of how much weight the data can bear, plus methodology and source tables.

How it works

From address to report in a few moments.

Four steps, no sign-up.

  1. Enter an address and dates

Any US address, and any window of up to 92 days since 1990.

  2. We gather the records

Nearby official stations from NOAA NCEI and the Iowa Mesonet. Gaps filled from model data (Open-Meteo) are flagged, never hidden.

  3. We adjust for the site

Land cover and terrain around the address set the exposure and topographic factor, following ASCE 7-22.

  4. You save the report

Read it on screen and download the PDF. Reports aren’t stored, so keep your copy.

A real report

Hurricane Ian, at the Lee County Courthouse.

This is actual output from the tool for 1700 Monroe St, Fort Myers, FL — September 27–28, 2022 — trimmed to fit the page. It is deliberately not a flattering example: it shows what the report does when the data is incomplete.

Wind through the event

Gust and sustained wind translated to the property. Dashed lines are the National Weather Service gust criteria. The hatched area is where this station has no data.

The limit the report flags: KFMY, the nearest station, stopped reporting at 10:29 AM EDT, after a peak gust of 58.7 mph at 8:59 AM EDT. Its neighbours recorded their peaks later: Southwest Florida Intl 67.9 mph at 11:08 AM EDT, and Punta Gorda (21 miles north) 134.6 mph at 4:13 PM EDT. The report doesn’t smooth that over: it rates regional coherence “Moderate” and says so in plain words.

Directional wind rose

Peak gust by compass sector. All the strong wind came from the east and southeast — 108 of 185 observations were from the E sector. In the full report this is drawn over satellite imagery of the property.

Questions

Before you run one.

Who is this for?

Homeowners, roofers, adjusters and engineers who need a documented estimate of the wind at one specific address during one specific event.

How accurate is it?

It translates measured station winds to the site with published methods (ASCE 7-22 exposure constants, NWS thresholds). It is still an estimate: the nearest station can be miles away and stations can fail in a storm, as in the sample above. Every report discloses the station distance, data gaps and any model-filled values, and rates its own confidence.

What addresses and dates work?

US addresses, for any period of up to 92 days since 1990. The period must be in the past.

What do I get, and how do I keep it?

The full report on screen, plus a Download PDF button. Reports are not stored, so save the PDF when it finishes.

What about payment and privacy?

You pay once per report through PayPal. There are no accounts or subscriptions, and this site sets no cookies of its own. We keep only a record of the payment (order ID, amount, time and the PayPal payer email) so a paid report can’t be reused; we do not keep your address or results.

Will an insurer or court accept it?

We can’t promise that. The report is a documented analysis of public weather data, not a substitute for a licensed engineer’s judgment or an official NWS storm report.
